About Richard Coughlin

In an academic career spanning over three decades, my teaching and research interests have focused on the intersections between states, markets, and civil society in the development of social policy in advanced nations. My publications have explored such topics as public attitudes toward taxing and spending, health, welfare and social security reforms, the sociological foundations of economic behavior, alternative conceptions of political ideology, and the relationship between morality, efficiency, and rationality in market economies.

I served as chair of the Sociology Department at the University of New Mexico for ten years. From 1993-96, I held the position of executive director of the Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics (SASE), an international, interdisciplinary organization. In that capacity I organized international conferences in Paris, Washington, DC, and Geneva.

In 1997 received the Distinguished Service Award, Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics. I received a Swedish-American Bicentennial Fellowship in 1989, and was a Fulbright Senior Scholar at the University of Umeå, Sweden in 1993-94.
