William Ernst Mussman, oldest child of Henry and Sofia, born September 14, 1842, New Orleans, Louisana. His parents moved to Covington, Kentucky when he was a boy, and was where he spent his youth and was educated in the public schools. He also took courses at a business college. When the Civil War between the northern and southern states started, he and his younger brother, John Henry, though living in Kentucky, a southern state, volunteered for service in the Union Army in Ohio. Both served with distinction for the duration of the war and received honorable and complimentary discharges from the Government at its close.

William was captured by the "Rebels" during a battle, and was imprisoned but escaped and after making his way back to Union Territory, he reported to headquarters and served with his regiment until mustered out.

After the war William returned to Covington and on April 26, 1866 married Rebecca Mulberry. The wedding being in the Second Presbyterian Church, Covington, Kentucky. Most of William's active life he followed the occupation of woodworking. He retired on account of his health and suffered a stroke about six months before his death. He died December 4, 1924 at his home in Covington, Kentucky. Rebecca Mulberry Mussman, wife, was born January 12, 1845, Lomdery (Londondery?, Ireland. She came to the United States with her parents in 1850. Her father's name, Robert Mulberry. Her mother Matilda Bell Mulberry. A brother, James Mulberry, served in the Union Army in the Civil War and was killed during the battle of Shilo. Rebecca M. Mussman died March 17, 1934 at her home, Covington, Kentucky.

Both William E. and Rebecca M. Mussman are burried in the family lot Highland Cemetery, Kenton County, Kentucky.

William E. and Rebecca M. Mussman were the parents of eight children listed below:

5. William Alexander Mussman, born October 17, 1876, Covington, Kentucky.
6. Bertha Mussman, born April 5, 1879, Covington, Kentucky.
7. James Asher Mussman, born January 17, 1881, Covington, Kentucky.
8. Edithe Mussman, born January 15, 1884, Cincinnati, Ohio.*

* = Both corresponded with David's grandmother, Minnie Leota Mussman Brumback, until their death. Both are buried in Covington, Kentucky.
