    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SIGNIFICANT DATES IN THE HISTORY OF CORVAIRS OF NEW MEXICO ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =1959= Jul 7 First day of production of the 1960 Corvair. Oct 2 Corvair introduced to the public. Considered CORVAIR BIRTHDAY. 1960 through 1964 Corvairs are considered "Early" models. =1961= Introduction of Oldsmobile's turbocharged F-85 V-8 engine and Corvair's 1962 model "Monza Spyder" with 150-HP turbocharged flat-6 engine. =1963= (Fall) Introduction of 1964 Corvairs with improved rear suspension. It is still a "swing axle" but has a transverse leaf spring for significantly improved handling. The "Spyder" is now its own model, no longer part of the "Monza" models. Some feel the 1964s are the "best" early models. =1964= (Fall) Introduction of redesigned Corvairs with independent rear suspension. "Spyder" name dropped. "Corsa" name introduced, available with either a 180-HP turbo engine or a 4-carburetor 140-HP engine. 1965 through 1969 Corvairs are considered "Late" models. =1965= (Fall) Introduction of the 1966 models, arguably the last Corvair with actual improvements in design. Last year for 180-HP turbo engines. Nov 30 Publication of "UNSAFE AT ANY SPEED" by Ralph Nader. 1) Seen by many as the primary factor in the death of the Corvair. 2) May be the reason GM did not kill the Corvair until the 1969 model! =1966= (Fall) For the 1967 model year the 140-HP engine is dropped, but later is reinstated due to popular demand. =1969= May 14 Last day of Corvair production. The Corvair Society of America (CORSA) is founded. =1973= May 17 Mark L. Morgan, a student at the University of New Mexico, leaves notes on Corvair windshields in Albuquerque telling owners about the national CORSA organization and about the nearest Corvair club: Rocky Mountain CORSA in Denver. Jun 19 Jim writes a letter to Rocky Mountain CORSA in Denver. Jim joins Rocky Mountain CORSA as the nearest Corvair club. Sep 29 Jim joins National CORSA and gets back issues of the CORSA Quarterly. =1974= Mar 5 Pete Colburn writes to CORSA to obtain a list of all members in New Mexico. He writes a letter to each member, asking if they'd like to get together to form a Corvair Club. Mar 9 Jim phones Pete Colburn and they discuss starting a Corvair club. Other New Mexico CORSA members and Corvair owners contact Pete. Mar 17 Pete Colburn organizes a meeting of several local Corvair owners on a Sunday at the large adobe house of Carl Johnson on Griegos Road NW in Albuquerque. Those attending agree to hold a formal meeting to set up a Corvair club the following month. Attending the March meeting: Carl Johnson, Pete Colburn, Jim Pittman and a couple with a gray late sedan with air conditioning and 175x13 Michelin-ZX tires -- they never came to any more meetings. We didn't preserve a list of several others who attended. Apr 10 The first meeting of a group of Corvair enthusiasts is held on a Wednesday at the home of Pete's parents. Those present are: * Francis Boydston * Pete Colburn * Rick Grable * Dale Housley * Carl Johnson * Mark Morgan * Jim Pittman * Duncan Puett We name the club CORVAIRS OF NEW MEXICO. Our first president is Mark Morgan who is a UNM student. (1974-Apr-10) Club dues are set at $ 5 per year Apr 23 Second Club meeting - We meet at Duncan Puett's shop in the south valley. We see and admire some of Duncan's Corvair-powered race cars. May 7 Third Club meeting - We meet at ED BLACK'S CHEVROLET on San Mateo NE. Our sponsor there is Milton Sanchez, an outstanding Chevrolet salesman. Oct 1 Francis Boydston organizes a car show at Winrock Shopping Center. Oct 18 The First CNM Car Show under the pyramid at Winrock Shopping Center. Dec 19 Mark Morgan puts together and mails out our first newsletter, a special "Christmas issue" whose cover date is January 1975. Vol 1 Nr 1. =1975= Jan 24 The February 1975 issue of the newsletter is mailed. Feb 24 The March issue of the newsletter is mailed. Mar 4 Our 13th club meeting is at HOUSE OF COVERS, Hector & Steve Gongora. Mar 17 1st Anniversary Oct 7 We hold our first elections for club officers: * President: Sylvan Zuercher * Vice-president: Joel Nash * Secretary/treasurer: Steve Gongora Who were the original officers in 1974? Mark Morgan thinks he became president in 1974 mostly by default. Steve Gongora acted as Vice-President although he wasn't elected. Dirk Coffman acted as Treasurer. When he quit, Mark got his friend Larry Saunders to take the job. Jim remembers that Pete wanted to run things, but the rest of us didn't vote for him, so he more or less drifted away from the Club. Jim also remembers that when Mark left Albuquerque to go on duty with the Navy, Pete suggested that he and Jim take over editing the Newsletter. Jim was not interested in editing a newsletter at that time, nor would he have wanted to be a co-editor. Dec Jim puts together a questionnaire and distributs it to the members. There were few responses and most of those came in late. Eventually we did one more questionnaire, then gave up on the idea as not worth the trouble. Dec 30 We have an Executive Meeting to plan future club activities. Attending: Sylvan Zuercher, Joel Nash, Steve Gongora, Francis Boydston, Jim Pittman Mark Morgan continues to edit and publish our newsletter until he graduates from UNM and goes on active duty with the Navy. =1976= Feb 3 Bill Reider: tech talk on distributors Mar 17 2nd Anniversary Apr 6 Glen Thompson takes over as newsletter editor, May 1976 issue May 5 We meet at Ed Black's Chevrolet May ?
