When did you leave on your honeymoon?

MIGUEL:  We left on our honeymoon three days after [the wedding].

You must've been exhausted?

MIGUEL:  Yes, because there were things to prepare before our departure.  We left on our honeymoon; we were in Bonaire, a precious Caribbean island.  Lovely, lovely!  We were there over a week.  Then we spent a few days in Puerto Rico.  Puerto Rico was a little different from Bonaire because there was more socializing in Puerto Rico.

GABRIELA:  We said:  "Let's go to Bonaire.  No one will recognize us there."  Miguel and Gabriela laugh.

I'd like to take it a step at a time.  At the same time that you were preparing for the wedding in 15 days time --which is a lot of work!-- you were also preparing for the honeymoon?

MIGUEL:  Of course!

Who chose the place?  Why Bonaire?

MIGUEL:  We both did

GABRIELA:  We both did

MIGUEL:  We wanted Los Roques or Bonaire.  Why?  Because they're pristine, paradise-like locations.  There are no large hotel chains, discotheques, or casinos.  They're more peaceful.

GABRIELA:  We wanted to relax.

Peace, love and tranquility

MIGUEL:  Yes, we wanted to relax; to stretch out on a beautiful, white, sandy, transparent beach.  We wanted to stay there peacefully, quietly without anyone recognizing us.  But not true!

GABRIELA:  Not true!

MIGUEL:  It just so happens all three Caribbean islands have Venevision through their cable.  There's only one cable system there... and as a result, all the people watch Venevision.  They have a whole bunch of American channels but no.  They watch Venevision.  They are impressive novela viewers!

How many days in Bonaire?

MIGUEL:  We were there seven, almost eight days in Bonaire because we were there most of an eighth day.  Then we spent four days in Puerto Rico.

And everyone on the island knew you?

MIGUEL:  Yes.  As it turns out, the people there are very lovely and they try not to be indiscreet.  They knew we were on our honeymoon.  Something surprising...  One of the best anecdotes we have from when we arrived at the airport and were going through immigration:  the immigration officer received us like this, with a big smile on his face.  And we thought:  "Hmmm?"

GABRIELA:  We didn't understand.

MIGUEL:  Then as he was stamping [our entry documents], he said:  "Happy honeymoon!  We saw the wedding!".  And well, that was a surprise.  And then all the people in the hotel, all the people in the island...

GABRIELA:  ...would knock on our hotel room door.

Oh my God!  In an inopportune moment?

MIGUEL & GABRIELA:  No no

MIGUEL:  Because they would always try to do it during the daytime.  They are all very friendly/gracious!

¿Cuando se van de luna de miel?

MIGUEL:  Nos fuimos de luna de miel tres días después [de la boda].

¿Deben de haber estado muy agotados?

MIGUEL:  Sí, porque había cosas que preparar antes de irnos.  Nos fuimos de luna de miel; estuvimos en Bonaire, una preciosa isla del Caribe.  ¡Linda, linda!  Estuvimos allí más de una semana.  Luego estuvimos unos días en Puerto Rico.  Lo de Puerto Rico fue un poco diferente al de Bonaire, ¿verdad?, porque Puerto Rico fue más social.

GABRIELA:  Dijimos:  "Vámonos a Bonaire que nadie nos va a conocer allá."  Miguel y Gabriela se ríen.

Quiero ir por partes.  A la par de que están preparando el matrimonio en 15 dias, ¡es muchísimo trabajo!, ¿también están preparando la luna de miel?

MIGUEL:  ¡Claro!

¿Quién escogió el lugar?  ¿Por qué Bonaire?

MIGUEL:  Entre los dos

GABRIELA:  Entre los dos

MIGUEL:  Nosotros queríamos Los Roques o Bonaire.  ¿Por qué?  Porque son sitios paradisiacos.  No hay estructura hotelera, ni discoteca, ni casino.  Son más tranquilas.

GABRIELA:  Queríamos "relax".

Paz, amor y tranquilidad

MIGUEL:  Sí, queríamos "relax"; extendernos en una arena blanca, linda, una playa transparente; y quedarnos allí tranquilitos sin que nadie nos reconociera.  ¡Pero mentira!

GABRIELA:  ¡Mentira!

MIGUEL:  Porque resulta que las tres islas del Caribe tienen a Venevisión en su cable.  Allí sólo hay un sistema de cable y resulta que toda la gente lo que ve es Venevisión.  Tienen una cantidad de canales Americanos; pero no.  Ellos ven Venevisión.  ¡Ellos son noveleros impresionante!

¿Cuantos días en Bonaire?

MIGUEL:  Estuvimos siete casi ocho días en Bonaire porque estuvimos un poco más de un octavo día y luego estuvimos cuatro días en Puerto Rico.

¿Y toda la isla los conocía?

MIGUEL:  Sí, resulta que la gente de allá es muy bonita, ¿no?  Es gente que trata de no ser indiscreta.  Sabía que estábamos de luna de miel.  Lo sorprendente...  Una de las anécdotas mejores que tenemos de cuando llegamos al aeropuerto, ¿verdad?, e íbamos pasando por inmigración:  el señor nos recibe así, con una sonrisa, ¿no?  Y nosotros:  ¿"Hummm?"

GABRIELA:  No entendíamos.

MIGUEL:  Y entonces estaba dando el sello:  "¡Feliz luna de miel!  Vimos la boda!"  Y bueno, nos llevamos esa sorpresa.  Y luego toda la gente del hotel, toda la gente de la isla...

GABRIELA:  ...tocaba la puerta de la habitación.

¡Ay Dios mío!  ¿En algún momento inoportuno?

MIGUEL y GABRIELA:  No, no

MIGUEL:  Porque siempre trataban de hacerlo de día.  ¡Ellos son cheverísimos todos!
