Expedition Map
The Ecosystem research expeditions take place in the tropical forest of Nepal
and the semiarid climate of New Mexico.
There are different types of ecosystems in Nepal unique to the
geographical features. Nepal is divided into the Himal, the Hills, and the Terai.
The mid-hilly region is located between the Himalayas to the north and the
lowlands of Terai to the south. About half of the country’s land is
represented by the hilly region.
New Mexico is famous for its diverse history, from
pre-historic shallow ocean to modern-day high desert, volcanoes and
mountain regions. Western tent caterpillars hatch in May and eat their way
through the aspens in the Carson National Forest, especially the Canjilon area at the southern end of the San Juan
Mountains, NM. There have also been reports of the critters in the Santa Fe
National Forest. Terry Rodgers, a forest health official with the U.S. Forest
Service in Albuquerque, said officials have had numerous calls from
northern New Mexico about the pests.
