The mission of the Collection Management Department of the University of New Mexico General Library is to provide materials that support the educational and research programs of the university. The department is part of the Collections and Technology Services Division. The department is responsible for selecting resources in all formats, managing the collections, managing the library acquisitions budget, evaluating the collections, and reviewing gifts.
Collection management activities and policies are established and coordinated by the Collection Management Team which is composed of representatives from the major subject and format areas of the library.
Within the Collection Management Department there are library personnel who have the assignment to select materials in one or more subject areas. Most reference and branch librarians are selectors; other selectors work in all areas of the library. Most selectors have subject degrees or extensive experience in their respective areas.
Selectors initiate purchases for materials and manage their portions of the acquisitions budget. They work closely with campus faculty and students in order to share information about resources, services and programs.

The General Library develops collections that support the instructional and research mission of the university. It concentrates on supporting the current teaching and research strengths of the university; it collects comprehensively in very limited areas of university-defined strengths.
The library collects in all formats, recognizing that even as the growth of electronic resources continues, print remains a vital part of the scholarly publishing world.
The library participates in cooperative collection management projects such as the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources coalition (SPARC), and the Association of Research Libraries and Association of American Universities Global Resources Program. Such cooperative projects are part of efforts to address the changing nature of scholarly publication and the need to provide information at affordable prices.
Periodicals are a major source of research information and a major source of budget pressure for all academic libraries. This budget crisis has required the library to cancel serials, explore alternative means of delivery, and reallocate funds. Selectors work closely with departments to identify ways of dealing with this problem, including canceling some serials in order to add new ones that meet the changing needs of the departmental programs. The library continually review its collections and funding in order to meet changing campus needs.

The General Library receives gifts of books, periodicals, and audio-visual materials from a variety of sources. These materials are evaluated by individual subject selectors who decide whether an item is to be added to the collection. Items not added to the collection may be offered to the Friends of the UNM Libraries for fund raising purposes, exchanged with local or national vendors, or sent to libraries in the State of New Mexico or Latin America.
Inquiries about potential gifts should be directed to the Gifts Section 505-277-2360 or K. Gienger at kgienger@unm.edu. Individual subject selectors, area coordinators, or the Director of Collection Development may also be consulted.
Donors desiring to have their gifts appraised must make arrangements prior to donating materials to the General Library. This is in keeping with federal and state regulations governing the donation of materials. Official appraisals may be arranged with local out-of-print/rare book dealers located in the US West Dex Yellow Pages under the heading: Books--Used & Rare. The General Library will send a official acknowledgement when a gift has been received.
Donors wishing to make financial contributions to the General Library to support the continuing growth and development of its collections and programs are encouraged to contact the Library Development Office at 505-277-1267.
