Lecture Notes

The class will offer at least 2 movies/documentaries to the rest of the Department and College.  All students are expected to attend the movie sessions, which are to be held outside of class time.

I envision that one or two students could volunteer to introduce each movie with a short PowerPoint presentation of the athlete at question, or the topic at question.  Some of the available movies are listed below.

Ultimate Athlete: Pushing the Limit (1996) - Insight into the training methods and competition of world class athletes.

Blood, Sweat and Glory: Gods and Heroes (1992) - Hosted by Bob Costas, showing the rare film footage of more than 100 years of athletes in action.

Fire on the Track: The Steve Prefontaine Story (1995) - A Nike sponsored 55 minute production of the life and accomplishments of Steve Prefontaine.

Without Limits - A Hollywood movie of the life of Steve Prefontaine.

Prefontaine - Another Hollywood movie of the life of Steve Prefontaine.

Endurance - The life and Olympic 10 km victory of Haile Gebrselassie, a small Ethiopian athlete who set an Olympic and World record for the 10 km race in the 1990's, and who won Olympic gold in this event in Atlanta and Sydney.   The movie is excellent in showing the life of a country Ethiopian boy who lived to run.  Unfortunately, Haile did not qualify for the 10,000 m final in Athens.
