Katabatic winds from the ice cap drive a surface flow, which in the Southern
Hemisphere turns clockwise (Ekman transport) and forms a strong, Antarctic
Circumpolar Current (ACC) which encircles the continent.
Wind and Ice (Hydrologic) Loops
Water vapor evaporated from the ocean is transported to the center of the
ice cap where it falls as snow, becomes compacted, returns to the ocean
as ice and icebergs, and melts to be evaporated once again. The Wind Loop
is entrained in both the Ocean Circulation and IceLoops. The Ice Loop is
entrained in the Wind Loops, and the Ocean Circulation Loop.
Mantle Loop
The Mantle Loop acts on all the other loops by effecting loops in the ocean,
atmosphere, ice, and ecosystems. All these loops are entrained in the Mantle
Loop.
Other Loops
Some other loops mentioned in the story, although not prominent, include
the yearly travels of the Blue Whale, the life cycle of diatoms, the whirling
of cyclonic storms, motions of the solar system, and spinning galaxies.
