Rationale:
The mission of the College of Education is to advance the quality of the educational experience for all learners and to educate professionals who can facilitate human growth in schools, homes, communities, and workplaces. In carrying out this mission, the College explicitly values diversity in people and perspectives. This course is designed to contribute to the fulfillment of this mission, by explicitly focusing on student diversity, in terms of learning, abilities, background, and experiences.
Course Description and Purposes:
 
This course is designed to: 
  1. 1- provide students with information about resources, and technological skills that will facilitate their transition to gainfully employed educators,
  2. 2- update and enhance students’ web-based professional teaching portfolio.
  3. 3- learn about the possible uses of your web-based portfolio as a teaching tool, and
  4. 4- gain knowledge of the possible uses of computer based technologies in the classroom.

The computer classroom will be open for Dual License students during these times, even though we will not be having class. Sandra will be available for extra help during these times also.


 
Materials:
Zip Disk – PC Formatted, or
Floppy disks if you want to work at home and your computer doesn’t have zip drive.

Session Description:
 
Session 1:
  • 1- Network update
  • 2- Explore characteristics and examples of web-based professional teaching portfolios
  • 3- Using Inspiration, develop an outline or diagram indicating their goals for enhancing their web-based portfolio. Suggested criteria: 
    • i- Professional elements: Teaching philosophy, updated resume, teaching practice/lessons examples, etc. 
    • ii- Teaching elements: Parents page (inclusion of letter to parents, websites for parents, etc), resources for kids, resources for teachers, Webquest, etc. 
  • 4- Review the major features of Netscape Composer, and web-publishing directions.
Session 2:
  • 1- Exploring the possibilities for integrating Internet as a teaching tool or resource in relation to their on-going teaching or learning projects. On-line field trips, WebQuest, interactive sites will be explored.
  • 2- Searching and selecting at least five new web sites to include in their web-based portfolio. 
  • 3- Working on their web-based portfolio enhancement: Examples of resume and teaching philosophy will be analyzed to extract the main characteristics and constitutive elements. 
Session 3
  • 1- Web-based portfolio enhancement: Lesson plans.
  • 2- Parents and kids resources. 


Specific Course Requirements:
 

Professional Portfolio: 70 points
All students will be required to develop and turn in a professional teaching portfolio which will include representative work samples, philosophy statements, as well as other items (such as an up-to-date resume). Directions for completing this portfolio will be provided.
Web Resources: 15 points
All students will be required to include at least 10 links to Internet sites that provide teaching resources such as: lesson plans, webquests, interactive activities and virtual trips. Students must evaluate the sites and include a brief description that indicates characteristics or purpose for selecting them in relation to grade, thematic unit, lesson plan, etc. 
Portfolio Presentation: 15 points
Students will participate in a portfolio presentation session on April 28th. Directions for completing this assignment, along with grading criteria, will be passed out in class later in the Spring semester.


Evaluation Procedures and Policies

Grading System:  Final grades will be determined by a point system (X out of 100 total possible points). Fractionated grading will be used, with the following breakdown:
 
A = 93-100
A-= 90-92
B+ = 87-89
B = 83-86
B- = 80-82
C+ = 77-70
C = 73-76
C- = 70-72
D = 60-71
F = below 59
 

 

Late Paper Policy: If assignments are not turned in within 1 week of the assigned date, they will not be accepted, except in the case of illness or family emergency. If you will be not able to attend the class, please inform the instructor.
Class Participation Policy:Class participation conducive to students’ learning is expected.
Special Accommodations: Students who require special accommodations or instructional modifications need to notify the instructor by the beginning of the semester, or as soon as difficulties become apparent, with appropriate documentation from the Learning Support Services Center (277-6670).
