readings
Readings for the course are both on line and on reserve in
Zimmerman Library. I'll ask you to print out those readings we place under
scrutiny in class and to make copies of some of the reserve readings.
There is no textbook.
in class
Our class meeting times will be divided between working on
the computers (writing, searching) and class discussion about the readings
and about your writing. Do NOT plan to do your assigned reading in class.
DO come to class with annotated print copies of the readings under discussion.
writing assignments
You'll write three major assignments for the course, each worth
30 percent of your grade. The remaining 10 percent corresponds to your
attendance record and in-class participation. Come to class well prepared
for discussion; get drafts in on time; attend office hours to discuss
your work; share research findings with your classmates.
grading policy
Each assignment is prefaced by the study of certain strategies
or moves a writer might make in the given writing situation. Your grade
represents my best judgment as to how successfully you implemented these
strategies and moves. After you draft your paper, I'll look at it carefully
to ascertain what you're trying to accomplish and offer suggestions to
help you achieve your goals. I do not edit papers, nor do I tell you what
you should do to get an A.
attendance
policy
You may miss three classes
for whatever reason you find appropriate, including illness, car trouble,
and family emergency. Please notify me beforehand or immediately after
each absence (email is best). If you miss more than three class periods,
your ability to keep up with coursework will be in jeopardy, and I'll
encourage you to drop the course.
