Exploring Perimeter and Area: A WebQuest

Introduction | Task | Process| Resources | Evaluation| Conclusion

Introduction:
In this WebQuest, you will be working in small groups of 2-4 to design a dream house. Use your imagination and have fun with the project.

The Task:
To prepare for this project you should have measured at least three rooms in your own home to give you some perspective of size for the rooms you will be designing. You will draw the floor plans on graph paper, including fencing for your yard, landscaping and other ammenities.

Roles:
Having explored perimeter and area, draw your dream house with input from the group. Choose roles as:
The task master to make sure everyone stays on task.
An artist or draftsman to draw your house.
A mathematician to do the calculations.
A recorder to write answers to questions and ask questions as needed.

The Process:
Go to
Area Explorer.
Read everything CAREFULLY.
Practice finding the area of several figures.

Go to Perimeter Explorer
Read everything CAREFULLY.
Practice finding the area of several figures.

What patterns do you notice? If the perimeter changes, does the area change?  What if the area changes; does the perimeter also change?  What shape gives you the largest area without changing the perimeter? What shape gives you the smallest area with the same perimeter?

As a final review, go to Math Goodies - Perimeter
Read carefully and do the exercises.

Now try Math Goodies - Area.

Evaluation:

Answer the questions on the evaluation form and submit your drawing.  Your response will be emailed to Tina Newby, the instructor for this course.

Conclusion:

CONGRATULATIONS again! You have used your knowledge of measurement, area and perimeter to design a house. You have also used your artistic ability to share it with your classmates. Who knows? This may be the beginning of a new career.
