China Then and Now

Han Dynasty (206 B.C.–A.D. 220)

Han tomb attendant
2012.91.48, tomb guardian, painted ceramic
Eason Eige collection; photo by B. Bernard

Most of the paint on this figurine has been lost. It's an example of mingqi (tomb offerings) and stands (kneels, actually) 14 inches (36 cm) tall.

The photo below provides a closeup of the face. The reserved expression contrasts with that on a different female attendant, from the Tang dynasty, seen here.
