Kim Ong, 1932–2016

Mr. Kim Ong

Mr. Kim Ong was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1932. While attending Albuquerque High School he was class president his sophomore, junior, and senior years. He graduated in 1950 and began attending the University of New Mexico, but was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served as a vehicle mechanic in Korea in 1954 and 1955, as part of the 50th Antiaircraft Battallion. On being discharged he returned to UNM and earned a B.S. in chemical engineering in 1958.

Mr. Ong then joined the U.S. Geological Survey, where he worked as a water quality specialist until retiring in 1996. From 1998 to 2004 he served on the citizen advisory board for Sandia National Laboratory. He was also a long-time member of the YMCA and of the Chinese American Citizens Alliance. His personal interests included photography, sports, and popular music. He was also a husband, father, and granfather.
