Part 1

  1. Choose a topic.
  2. Identify search terms (keywords).
  3. Identify criteria for "good source."
  4. Open Research Log document and record this information.

Part 2 Find a source

  1. Select search tool.
  2. Search for source.
  3. Record search terms, citation on Research Log
  4. Evaluate source using these questions:
    • Does this source introduce new ideas about my topic I need to look up?
    • Does this source answer any of my questions about my topic?
    • Is this information accurate and on topic?
    • Is there a bibliography with references I can use?
    • Would other works by this author be useful?
    • Does this source identify other experts on my topic?
    • How could I use the information provided?
    • Are there other relevant factors from the Expanded TRAP rubric I should consider?

Part 3--Identify Next Step

Your choice

  • Find another source from the bibliography.
  • Look for other works by same author.
  • Do new search with new search words using same finding tool
  • Do same search in new finding tool.
  • Look for other types of "media" (book, video, newspaper).

Part 4--Repeat by finding a new source.
