2004 Application Forms Now Available

November 21, 2003

Dear Teachers,
The University of New Mexico and The College of Education are providing opportunities for teachers in New Mexico to participate in one of four Mathematics and Science Teacher Academies (UNMMSTA). We are offering several Academies located in different sites in New Mexico beginning the Summer of 2004. Each Academy is designed to:
• increase K-12 teachers’ knowledge of mathematics or science;
• familiarize and support teachers in implementing new teaching strategies that excite
children’s interest in science or mathematics;
• enhance teachers instruction to reflect state and national standards in mathematics or
science; and,
• develop teachers’ ability to design and deliver professional development for colleagues in
their schools and community.
Each Academy is a two year experience consisting of:
• a summer experience (3 weeks) of intensive study of content and exemplary instructional
practices in science or mathematics;
• eight follow-up seminars during the academic year;
• a second summer experience (3 weeks) of additional intensive study in the content and
instructional areas as well as methods of assisting/supporting other teachers to
implement instructional improvements in mathematics and/or science; and,
• professional development activities conducted by the teachers for their school and/or
community.
Applications are now being accepted from teachers. Please submit your application for the UNMMST Academy by the date listed at the bottom of the fact sheet. You must agree to participate in the entire Summer Academy for two summers and participate in the follow-up academic year seminars over the two academic years.
Teacher stipends and housing expenses will be provided. If you would like additional information or need questions answered, please telephone or write me. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,

UNM Mathematics and Science Teacher Academy

*What is the Teachers and Administrators Summer Academy?
The Summer Academy consists of four professional development programs for K-12teachers. The emphasis of the Academy is on increasing teacher knowledge of science and mathematics and enhancing instructional practices in ways that reflect national standards. The program consists of a three-week Summer Academy followed with monthly seminars during the academic school year, a second three-week Summer Academy, and culminating in a second academic year program.
*What is the purpose of the Summer Academy?
The purpose of the Academy is to acquaint K-12 teachers and administrators with recent developments in mathematics and science education and in instructional practice. The Academy will broaden the content knowledge of the participants and familiarize them with teaching methods that attract and excite student interest in mathematics and science.
*Who is eligible to participate in the Summer Academy?
K-12 teachers in New Mexico are invited to participate in one of four UNMMST Academies. Each Academy is seeking teachers to participate in the two Summer Academies and implement innovative integrated content units in their classes during the first academic year. They will work with teaching colleagues during the second academic year to implement an instructional/content improvement plan. Teachers from schools with under represented student populations are strongly encouraged to apply. Teachers from minority or under represented populations are also encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to teacher-pairs who will be able to collaborate during the academic years.
*What commitment is expected from participating teachers and schools?
Teachers will attend the three-week Summer Academies and the activities during the two academic years. In addition, they will work together in their schools to implement science and/or mathematics content. School principals or their representative must be willing to support the implementation of innovative mathematics and science content as well as support the teachers in the two academic year follow-up activities.
*What kind of support will participating teachers and schools receive?
Teacher participants will receive a stipend (or tuition support) of $250.00 a week for each Summer Academy. Housing will be provided during the Summer Academy. The teachers will receive additional funds to support the purchase of books, materials and supplies for their classrooms. Substitute teacher costs will be provided for the follow-up days during the academic years. Teachers may opt to receive graduate credit for the Summer Academy (up to 6 credit hours) and for the academic year follow-up (1 credit hour) from UNM.
*How are the Academy goals linked to reform efforts in New Mexico and nationwide?
The Summer Academy supports the efforts of nationally funded initiatives such as the statewide Systemic Initiative in Mathematics and Science Education (SIMSE). The professional development experiences for the Academy participants reflect the recommendations of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' (NCTM) in the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (1989), Principals and Standards for School Mathematics (NCTM, 2000), and Professional Standards for Teaching Mathematics (1991) and the National Research Council's (NRC) recommendations in their National Science Education Standards (1996).
