GENERAL INFORMATION

1. OFFICE HOURS: Wednesday 10-11 and 1-2 & Thursday 3-4. Other meeting times can be arranged via email.

2. TEXTBOOKS: The Control of Nature (Noonday Press) by John McPhee. There will be one major reading assignment from this book (~90 pages). The readings will be available online several weeks before the assignment. Also, inexpensive used copies can be found on the internet and in used bookstores around town.
There is no lab textbook; however, to succeed in this lab, you must read assigned chapters from your lecture class text (The Blue Planet: An Introduction to Earth System Science, 2nd ed.) prior to class. Select chapters are available from this site (see readings, left)

3. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. Only absences due to serious reasons will be excused (i.e. death in the family or serious illness). Please tell your employer that you are not available to work during your lab time. In the event that you must miss class, get in contact with me ahead of time and try to attend another lab. It is your responsibility to contact me for approved make-ups before the next week's lab.

4. LAB EXERCISES AND HOMEWORK should not be late. All lab exercises will be due at the beginning of the next lab period, one week after the assignment was issued. Late work will be penalized one letter grade for every day it is late and no late work will be accepted after I have returned the graded assignment.

5. QUIZZES: Short quizzes will be given most weeks at the beginning of lab. Quizzes for missed weeks my be made up at the next week's lab. You must tell me you need to make up the quiz before the lab.

6. GRADING: Your lowest two lab grades will be dropped from your final grade. Missed labs beyond that will be assigned a grade of zero. Labs and homework grades will account for 100% of your final grade. This 1-credit grade is independent of your grade in the environmental science lecture class.

7. LABORATORY WORK: PLEASE use pencil. Do your own work and write answers in your own words, but you can (and should) work in groups. Copying another person's answer on a lab will result in a zero for that lab. Also, plagiarism on the response paper homework will result in no credit for this class.

8. FIELD TRIPS: There is one scheduled field trip to the Rio Grande Nature Center during lab time. You will need to give proof of insurance on the field trip release form, which I will hand out 4 weeks prior to the trip. If you do not have personal or university medical insurance, you must file a form with a $1.00 fee for one-day UNM provided insurance 2 weeks before we leave. Please dress appropriately for the trip. Wear comfy shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty. You might get muddy, wet, and/or bitten by bugs.
