HENRY MUSSMAN, SR.

Henry Mussman, Sr., born in Linsberg, Hanover, Prussia, December 13, 1813. His father died in Henry's infancy, and little is known of him. The only father he knew was his stepfather, Daniel Smith, who was a seaman.

Henry Mussman, Sr. learned the trade of woodworking at Niemberg. He emigrated to the United States in 1830, landing at New Orleans, Louisana. While there he married Sophia Smith Dulling, December 9, 1841. Some time later he brought his family to Covington, Kentucky, where for sometime he resided at 112 Robins Street. He also resided in Cincinnati, Ohio, for a time where he applied for citizenship, he became a citizen of the United States on October 13, 1846, being sworn in by E. C. Roll, Clerk of Court of Common Pleas of Hamilton County, Ohio.

Henry and Sophia Mussman were a home and family loving couple, of the pioneer type, honest and industrious, of Protestant faith, with faith in the democratic ideals of the United States. To the best of their ability, they also instilled the same ideals in their children, and seeing that they received the public school education of the time.

Due to changing conditions of the times, Mr. Mussman at times followed various occupations and official records list his occupation as cabinet maker. For a time before the Civil War, he was employed on the construction of the suspension bridge between Cincinnati and Covington. During the war he drove supply trains for the US Army.

When Morgan and his raiders were making forays and thrusts at military objectives in northern Kentucky and southern Ohio, he acted as a guard for Home defense of the surrounding country, guarding railroads, bridges, roads, etc.

Though living in Kentucky, a southern State, his two oldest sons volunteered, and served with distinction, in the Union Army throught the war.

In 1869 the Mussmans purchased property at 482 John Street, Cincinnati, Ohio, where they resided until their deaths. Mr. Mussman was active and regularly employed until the illness that caused his death.

Sophia Smith (Schmidt?) Mussman, wife, was born May 28, 1809 in Prussia. She was industrious, a good mother, cook and houskeeper, and always of very neat appearance.

Henry Mussman died September 17, 1888, Cincinnati, Ohio. Sophia Smith Mussman died April 12, 1889, Cincinnati, Ohio. Both are buried in the family lot in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington, Kentucky.
