Eisenhower Grant Project:

The focus of this project was supporting mentoring activities for 10 recent graduates of the Secondary Mathematics and Science Teacher Education Program. In the fall of 2000, the 10 first year mathematics and science teachers selected a mentor teacher in their subject area at the school where they worked. The novice teachers met regularly with their mentor throughout the year to receive support and general assistance. In addition, each novice teacher/mentor team developed activities for use in the classroom.

New Mexico Collaborative for Excellence in Teacher Preparation (NM-CETP):

This National Science Foundation grant supports course reforms, programs, and research that impact preservice science and mathematics teachers. I have worked closely with Dr. Laura Crossey in the Department of Earth & Planetary Science to recruit faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences on both UNM main campus and UNM-Gallup to support course reforms in mathematics and the sciences. These reforms promote active student learning characterized by a diverse array of instructional approaches, such as cooperative learning groups, inquiry exercises that promote problem solving and critical thinking, independent projects, opportunities to demonstrate mastery through application of knowledge to relevant and timely situations, peer teaching, etc.

During the 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 academic years, NM-CETP supported mentoring activities for cooperating teachers who mentored preservice teachers during the student teaching experience. In 2000, a new student club for prospective K-12 science and mathematics teachers was initiated specifically to recruit more students into education. In the summer of 2000, I began a collaborative research project with Dr. Julie DePree from the Department of Mathematics, UNM-Valencia. Our goal is to identify how mathematics content courses and the methods course for prospective elementary school teachers can be further integrated.

APS and Bernalillo Title II Workshops:

During the 2000-2001 academic year, I conducted monthly professional development workshops for the "math leaders" from every middle school and high school in the Albuquerque Public Schools. In the spring of 2001, I began conducting professional development sessions for K-8 teachers in the Bernalillo Public Schools who are leading study sessions in mathematics for their colleagues at their respective schools. Topics studied across these workshops included assessment, content and process standards, issues of equity and access, teaching mathematics to English Language Learners, and reforms in mathematics education.
