WHAT IS EXPECTED

For this class, you will write one fully developed analytical paper (5-10 pages) using standard essay structure. Consider your audience to be composed of readers who are highly intelligent, but who are not experts in your subject. I expect your analytical paper to go well beyond a simple overview or summary of your topic. Instead, your paper must analyze your material in light of a specific, important, unique point you wish to make about the evidence in the texts. While an analytical paper may need to include a brief summary of a text (5-10 sentences on plot and background) for the readers' convenience, this paper is not a book report; it requires that you examine critically the evidence from the text(s) and formulate a particular view of the text(s) based on that evidence. In your analytical paper, work to develop insights that are original, significant, and assist your reader reach a stronger understanding of the material. In addition, since this is a formal paper, it must include: an introduction; supporting paragraphs; a conclusion; and correctly documented references. To be successful, each paper will focus its analysis by means of a strong, analytical thesis statement supported and explained using examples from the texts. As with any analytical college paper, the more specifically focused your paper is, the more effective it is likely to be. In addition, each paper must incorporate at least two sources, either primary or secondary. In terms of your grade, your analytical paper will be scored for the effectiveness of the final product (how well it meets the assignment, displays serious and significant thought, stands by itself without oral explanation, establishes and supports an appropriate logical structure, meets acceptable standards of written English, etc.).On each paper, along with your score, I will write end comments as well as a writing style graph (see link on left) consisting of seven categories rated from 1-5 (weakest = 1, strongest = 5). This scale is intended to give you another kind of evaluation that will help you understand the strengths and weaknesses of your writing. The numbers on this scale, however, are not computed to determine your paper's score.
