Guidelines for Presenting Scientific Research Papers
Here’s WHAT your Power Point presentation should include by TOPIC.

1) Title Slide: original title, original authors, journal, year and presented by YOUR name.

2) Introduction Slide: introduce audience to what this study is investigating. Highlight the background information/research provided by authors.

3) Purpose, Question, or problem of study:
What is the purpose(s), problems(s), or question(s) being addressed?
(i.e., what were the overall goals and the specific aims of the study?)

Some journals have the authors present their hypotheses (or possible outcomes to the study). If so, state what the authors' hypotheses were as well. When you refer to study say 'the authors' or 'the researchers;' NOT my study or our study.

4) Significance of study
Why is it important? Usually this is stated in the article. If not, you need to state this.

5) Methods: Be Detailed!
How did the authors conduct the study? Describe subjects, test, conditions, equipment, protocol, etc. Be very specific. CAUTION: Be careful of content overload. You may need to focus on the most important variables of the study and EXCLUDE others from your presentation.

6) Results Slide(s)
What are the results of the study? Use tables, charts, figures but SHOW results. IMPORTANT: Significant should only be stated if the result is statistically significant. Always present the probability with stats: i.e., p<0.05, p<0.01, p>0.05. PLEASE NOTE that p<0.05 means it is significant: and p>0.05 means it is NOT significant.

7) Discussion Slide: Summarize the AUTHORS discussion of the results.
What findings did the authors reach? Do they support the original hypothesis? What do they accept and what do they reject? What do the authors consider significant about this study? How did the authors say this study compared to similar studies?

8). Recommendations from Authors Slide
Do the authors recommend any further investigations? If so what? Do you agree? Any suggestions. Do not spend much time on the recommendations...be brief.

9) Conclusion Slide: This slide highlights the MAIN conclusions of study!

10) Thank You and Questions Slide

Some Keys to Analyzing Research
Downsize the Methods/Results of overly complex studies! Focus on most intesting variables for class!
Be an OBJECTIVE DETECTIVE as you read!
When reviewing the methods make sure you note which of the following apply.
Subject Population: Gender, age, fitness level, health condition, and number of subjects? Were the subjects randomly selected and randomly assigned to groups? What controls were in place by the researchers such as non-smokers or athletic ability, etc? Do not state the first name of the researchers when you refer to them. Just last name. Example, Jacobs et al means Jacobs and others.

Presentation Due Day/Time: Your PPT presentation is due Tuesday by 12 midnight (the night before you present) to Dr. Kravitz (lkravitz@unm.edu). Remember, your presentation is without NOTES. Your PPT is your outline. Your presentation is up to 12 min...it is timed.
