ANALYSIS OF DATA-BASED PUBLISHED RESEARCH
Choose a recent data-based article in your area of research interest. Answer the following questions in a typewritten paper. Follow the outline in the order presented. Attach the article to your analysis. Be succinct with your answers. Discuss thoroughly the meaningful areas. Please write in complete sentences.
I. Title
A. Is it too long or short?

C. Does it accurately label the content of the study?
D. Is it a series title?
E. Does it contain abbreviations or unnecessary words?
II. Authorship
A. Is it a laundry list?
B. Are names in proper and consistent form?
C. Are the authors affiliation stated?
D. Does it contain mailing addresses (for whom)?
III. Abstract
A. Does it state objectives and scope of the study?
B. Does it briefly describe methodology?
C. Does it summarize results?
D. Does it state principal conclusions?
E. Does it cite references to the literature?

IV. Key Words
A. Are key words identified?
B. Do key words reflect content of the article?
V. Introduction
A. Does it clearly state the nature and scope of the study?
B. Does it orient the reader and review pertinent research?
C. Is the methodology stated?
D. Are controversial issues and topics addressed and treated fairly?
E. Are any terms defined?
F. Is the problem (purpose) of the study clearly stated?
G. Are hypotheses stated and rationale for each presented clearly?
VI. Methods
A. General
1. Is enough detail provided to replicate this study?
2. Are methods presented in a logical order?
3. Are addresses and names of manufacturers equipment provided?
B. Sampling and subjects
1. Is basic demographic information provided?
2. Are sampling and assignment procedures adequately stated?
3. Are total number of subjects in each group stated?
4. Was informed consent and human research review approval obtained?
C. Equipment
1. Is specific equipment or technology properly described?
2. Is the function and usage of equipment clear?
D. Procedures
1. Is research design described fully?
2. Does design seem appropriate to the problem?
3. Do you have suggestions for an alternative design?
4. Are the data gathering procedures described?
5. Are the validity and reliability of data gathering procedures established?
6. Are appropriate statistics employed?
VII. Results
A. Are data adequately summarized and presented?
B. Do data substantiate the conclusions of the study?
C. Are tables and figures used to present the data necessary?
D. Are data presented in tables and figures repeated in text?
E. Are degrees of freedom and probability levels stated?
F. Are tables and figures clearly cited in text?
VIII. Discussion
A. Do authors clearly state support or nonsupport of hypotheses?
B. Are relationships between facts stated?
C. Are results related to previously published research?
D. Is significance of research discussed?
E. Are unsettled points presented and discussed?
F. Are conclusions stated clearly.
IX. Acknowledgements
A. Are sources of outside financial assistance identified appropriately?
B. Are any other acknowledgements made, and if so how?

A. Does author include references which do not appear in text?
B. Are complete details for each citation provided?
C. Is the referenced style and format consistent?

A. Do tables and figures complement the text?
B. Do descriptive titles adequately identify the content of the table, figure or photograph?
C. Are abbreviations, units of measure, probability levels, etc. footnoted?
