Laboratory 2Changes in Submaximal VO2, VE, RER and RPE During Graded Hypoxia
To collect actual data during exposure to hypoxia and analyze the data to reveal changes in exercise physiology.
This laboratory will provide an opportunity for class members to observe actual physiological changes that are incurred during acute exposure to hypoxia. Such an experience will reinforce class lecture material and emphasize the realities of human physiological adaptation to hypoxia.
Once class volunteer will complete rest and exercise sessions at each of Albuquerque (5,120 ft) and moderate-high altitude (14,000 ft). The exact exercise intensity to be used will depend on the subject and be determined during the start of the session. During each condition, data will be collected for heart rate, SaO2, VE, VO2, VCO2, and RER.
In separate figures, graph the response for each variable to the different altitude conditions. I recommend plotting the rest and exercise data together. Make sure you label the figures correctly and adequately.
Use the references provided in class and linked to this course website to explain the physiology of submaximal steady state exercise during acute exposure to hypobaric hypoxia.
