Cizhou ware (磁州窑) developed during the Northern Song period (960–1127 CE). The ware is named for Ci county in Heibei province. Cizhou ware starts with a white surface, which is either painted with black paint or decorated using a sgraffito (scratching) technique. In the latter technique the resulting marks are reglazed with black and the vessel is refired, producing effects from the subtle to the dramatic.
