Does the vessel have a polychrome design with red and black paint?
(Do not confuse paint with slip.) If YES, go to Page 2.
If NO, continue to the next question.

Does the vessel have black paint on an ivory, tan, or brown background?
If YES, go to Page 2.
If NO, continue to the next question.

Is the vessel a brown ware?
If YES, go to Page 3.
If NO, continue to the next question.

Is the vessel red-slipped?
If YES, go to Page 4.
If NO, continue to the next question.

Is the vessel black-slipped?
If YES, go to the page on Ramos Black.
If NO, the vessel may not be from the Casas Grandes culture. Other possible explanations include misfiring, refiring, or a vessel that falls outside the recognized types.
