Under the Apple Tree

This is our school’s literary magazine. Every spring, all of us submit our authentic poems or prose, and wait anxiously. In April, the editor of the magazine sends us a nice note if our piece gets accepted. I am fortunate that from second grade onward my poetry got accepted. It is a great joy to let other people read my poetry and also to see my name in print form.

My Teddy Bear--By Arjune Bose (II Grade)

My Teddy Bear,
Ate a pear
Plays truth or dare
Sat on a chair
Is friends with a mare
& says "I care!"

Camping--By Arjune Bose (III Grade)

We went camping in the woods,
The air was cool and crisp;
A little brook bubbled by,
A wise old owl hooted loudly on an oak tree,
The pine trees smelled fresh;
The mountain stood still,
The sky was clear and blue;
We only left our footprints,
And brought back memories.

Alamogordo--By Arjune Bose (IV Grade)

The Sierra Blanca Mountains looked like fossils of gigantic dinosaurs.
The crescent moon in the navy blue sky cast long shadows.
From the motel patio, I saw the white sands glistening in the misty moonlight!
The town lights sparkled in the distance.
The sky seemed enourmous, with thousands of twinkling stars.
There was silence all around,
It was a wonderful evening in Alamogordo.

Science Projects

Project.jpg (45359 bytes) I wait eagerly every year for the Science Fair. In the third grade, I had worked on a project to test pH (power of hydrogen) values of different household items without using litmus papers. I had used the red cabbage juice as the indicator for pH in this experiment. The project was very interesting and I developed a keen interest in doing chemical experiments.

In the fourth grade, I did a detailed experiment to test vitamin C concentration in various citrus fruits and green vegetables, and also studied the effect of vitamin C concentration on exposure to air, sunlight, and heat. I am proud that this project won the first prize, but most importantly, it was a great learning and fun experience.  Click on the link below for more...

Odyssey of the Mind

On Thursdays after school, I participate in our Odyssey of the Mind enrichment class. We play a lot of fun games that include logic games, creative thinking, problem-solving, creative solutions, evaluating ideas, making decisions, and interpreting hypothetical situations. We sometimes work in a group, as my teacher says this helps us to be team players and is also an important skill to have when we grow up. I think I build self-confidence when I actively participate in this program and I do feel very proud to cooperate with others and to think creatively. This program has taught me that our minds do not necessarily think alike – we can march to different drummers. Hearing different solutions opens me up to innovation and imagination.

Math Olympiad

I go to an after school enrichment class called "Math Olympiad." Our teacher gives us timed problems. I think this class has helped me a lot to develop a clearer understanding of mathematics. I have learned problem-solving strategies and strengthened my mathematical intuition. The monthly contests are fun and they boosted competition among my friends and me.

I learned that the "Math Olympiad" program was created in 1977 by Dr. George Lenchner; and in 1998, 120,000 students from 5000 teams worldwide participated in the Olympiads. My goal is to compete from our state next year.
