Who We Are

Engineering Student Services (ESS) is dedicated to the recruitment of students to the academic disciplines within the School of Engineering. We are committed to academic excellence and to the success of students by providing academic resources, leadership, and community building; increasing retention and graduation rates for our UNM School of Engineering students.

What is ESS?

The ESS office is comprised of several different forms of engineering student support.

·         Internships

·         Tutoring

·         K-12 Programs

·         Advising

·         Engineering Ambassadors Program

·         Scholarships

·         Outreach (high schools, college days)

·         Workshops

·         Minority Engineering Programs

US Army Educational Outreach ProgramsThe AEOP UNITE Program is a four-to-six week, pre-collegiate summer experience for talented high school students from groups historically underrepresented and underserved in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Held at higher education institutions across the country, UNITE encourages students to pursue college majors and careers in engineering and other STEM-related fields through a program of focused hands-on rigorous academics, enrichment, and career exploration.  Operating on a two-year cycle (2016-2017), UNITE targets rising 9th through 12th grade students.

National Summer Transportation InstituteThe University of New Mexico - National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is a three week summer high school program.  The purpose of the NSTI program is to promote awareness of Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).  Participation in the NSTI is free for students who have an interest in learning more about the transportation industry, its various modes (e.g., highways, aviation, transit and maritime) and how they might pursue post-secondary education concentrating on some aspect of transportation, and the numerous career opportunities available.

Raytheon Math Moves UIn the fall, The University of New Mexico partners with Raytheon, New Mexico MESA (Math, Engineering and Science Achievement) and the School of Engineering Student Organizations for Math Moves U (Grades 5th throough 9th).

Ball Aerospace & Technologies CorpBall Aerospace & Technologies Corp sponsors many UNM Multicultural Engineering Program's K-12 outreach activities in cooperation with the student organizations.

NASA Murep, others -

A vast majority of our minority engineering programs began offering their services to engineering and science students since the 1970's, each in an effort to seek funding to establish a retention and recruitment program for minority students. The primary focus was, and continues to be, to emphasize community building among students by implementing the following:

plutoplutoCluster minority students into common courses
plutoplutoCreate structured study groups for clustered minority students
plutoplutoProvide students with a comprehensive engineering orientation course
plutoplutoDevelop a student study center
plutoplutoDevelop leadership skills that will lead to successful internships or
pluto plutoemployment
