ESS Programs

The Engineering Student Services department is home to several academic and student programs.

The NSF Scholarship Program

Funded through grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) the Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S-STEM) program offer generous scholarships to students in a variety of engineering, mathematics and science disciplines.

Students are selected on the basis of financial need, academic merit, and potential for professional work.  The goal of this project is to provide the necessary financial and academic assistance to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled full-time in the School of Engineering (SOE) and/or the College of Arts & Sciences (for math or science majors).

The NSF STEP Program

The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Talent Expansion Program (STEP) seeks to increase the number of students (U.S. Citizens or permanent residents) receiving associate or baccalaureate degrees in established or emerging fields within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The STEP Program at UNM School of Engineering addresses the needs of student diversity and retention and revolves around the theme of Student-Centered Teaching and Learning. The Project has the following four components: Mentoring (by Faculty and Peers), Internships, Targeted Retention Activities, Financial Incentives.

NA-STEM

The Native Americans in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (NA-STEM) program offers a variety of services designed to retain Native American students at UNM in math, science, technology or engineering.  NA-STEM offers scholarships, tutoring services, advisement, and sponsors several monthly social events.

The Summer Transportation Institute (STI)

The objective of the STI program is to: 1) generate an awareness of job opportunities in the transportation industry, 2) stimulate and excite students to pursue careers in the transportation industry, and 3) to introduce participants to college success skills.

Student Organizations

The Engineering Student Services department is home to four successful student organizations designed to enrich the students’ college experience while offering numerous opportunities to network, travel to student conferences and develop valuable leadership skills.

NSBE - National Society of Black Engineers
SWE - Society of Women Engineers
HESO - Hispanic Engineering and Science Organization
