West Pac 1972
On 13 April 1972, the United States Ship Newport News
steamed for the south pacific after only three days preparation.
After a one month steam run that took her thru the
Panama
Canal, to Pearl Harbor,
Guam
and Subic Bay, she
finally arrived under the cover of darkness at the mouth of Haiphong Harbor
in Viet Nam on 9 May 1972.
The Newport News, like a mythological sea monster terrorized
the coast of North Vietnam, from the DMZ to Haiphong in the extreme north.
Subic Bay, in the Philippines, became our home port
during this tour, a welcome R&R place after each gunline.
The return home to Norfolk, Virginia in December 24,
1972 was also a much welcome event. |
