The objectives of the internship are to:
1. Provide the student with an opportunity to work in a fitness/health promotion or clinical program in order to experience actual work conditions in a different setting under the supervision of professionals outside of the University (academic) environment.
2. Refine and gain confidence in the skills developed in the exercise science program.

IV. Learning Activities
The student will spend up to 24 hours per week during the summer at the fitness/health promotion or clinical facility. Activities typically include fitness testing, exercise prescription, program development, exercise counseling, exercise supervision and exercise leadership. In addition, experience in program planning, data management, fiscal management, communication and conducting presentations may be included.

V. How do you get your site for the internship?
Students seek out (just like a professional job) their internship site. Below is a link which lists ongoing sites we have working arrangements. However, you can secure your own site if they are willing to let you be an intern for 180 hours. You can do your internship anywhere in the continental USA.

Log Entries, MIDTERM Evaluation, FINAL Evaluation, and Internship Portfolio.
See below for details!

A. You will email log entries to Dr. Kravitz EVERY OTHER Monday.
Email Dr. Kravitz your log entries. Each time you work at your site you will write a log entry of what you did, your daily hours and the running total hours for your internship. Logs are due every other Monday of the summer that you are doing your internship. Here is a sample log entry.
BELOW IS A SAMPLE LOG ENTRY FOR ONE DAYYOU WILL HAVE A LOG ENTRY FOR EVERY DAY YOU WORK AT THE INTERNSHIP
6/1/21 Monday
Today I met with Bradley, one of the exercise physiologists. He showed me how to use the electrical blood pressure machine and pulse oximeter. I got to take blood pressures and meet some of the phase III maintenance patients. These individuals have already completed phase I and phase II of the cardiac rehab program, and are now on a maintenance program. While the patients were exercising, I walked around the exercise room and talked with the patients and assisted them when necessary on the equipment. I observed a patient’s pulse on the pulse oximeter reveal bigemney sinus rhythm. It only seems to occur while this individual is exercising, and after a few minutes rest after, exercise, the bigemney rhythm subsides. This was exciting to see on my second day.
Day Hours 4.5
RUNNING TOTAL HOURS: 9.0

B. Have your site supervisor complete your MIDTERM evaluation when you have completed 90 hours of your internship. When you have completed 180 hours have your site supervisor complete your FINAL evaluation form. All forms are included with the summer internship packets. Make sure the evaluations are emailed directly to Dr. Kravitz.

C. Complete an Electronic Internship Portfolio to be emailed to Dr. Kravitz (lkravitz@unm.edu) at the conclusion of your internship. Put your Internship Portfolio into ONE MS Word Document. Entitle your Portfolio with your name. For example, I will entitle my Portfolio: LenKravitzPortfolio.docx
Each student shall collect flyers, information, handouts, and all written materials from the worksite and create an Electronic Internship Portfolio. The Internship Portfolio will be organized with topic headings in a MS Word Document (see below for order). Students are encouraged to take photos of experiences and include them in the Internship Portfolio. However, due to HIPAA confidentiality regulations you may not be able to take pictures of patients at your location (See below for other options). Please note that 5 pts (of the total 30 pts) are awarded for professional presentation and organization of the electronic notebook! See grading rubric at end of syllabus. The Electronic Internship Portfolio shall include the following:
1. Cover and/or title page: Your name and internship experience
2. Executive summary: 1 to 2 page-typewritten summary of internship
3. Bi-weekly log entries
4. Student‘s goals and objectives with internship experience: this can be bulleted
