PEP 478/579: Sports Physiology

Link to Student evaluations of this courses and my teaching (FACE system)

Welcome to the website for this class for the Spring 2007 semester.

This is the fourth time this class has been offered in its revised and therefore new format, and the second time as a required class in the undergraduate exercise science curriculum.  The course content for the class needs to be a delicate balance of revising fundamental exercise physiology without over-repetition, as well as presenting new material concerning the physiology of sports and athletic performance and training.  The latter aspects need to take priority, as no other course in our curriculum does an extensive coverage of exercise physiology applied to exercise training and sports and athletic performance.

In addition to the aforementioned content, I feel it is important that students also learn more about laboratory and field-based assessment of the variables known to influence or be associated with improved athletic and sports performance.  Consequently, there will be laboratory-based experiences in this class intertwined with field testing.

As our new teaching laboratory is not yet complete (not even started!!), the laboratory skills and teaching components of this class will be taxing on all of us.  I will be repeating laboratory sessions to sub-groups to reduce the student:teacher ratio, and provide more hands on experiences for students.  This added work on my behalf means that there will be less lecture time, and I have also had to revise all course content to tailor this course to our current needs and space limitations.

I hope you learn from the class and can apply this knowledge to your current and/or future employment.

Dr. Robergs
