China Then and Now

Early Chinese life in a Southwestern community: El Paso's Chinatown

Chinese rice bowl

A Chinese-made ceramic rice bowl, of exceptional quality, from El Paso's Chinatown (1881 to early 1900s). The right half of the profile drawing (upper left) is a cutaway to show the wall of the bowl. The bottom of the bowl is shown at the lower left, and a rolled-out rendering of the painted exterior is provided in the right half of the drawing. The Chinese character on the bowl exterior translates as "long life." Image from a report by Dr. Edward Staskireference, used by permission of the University Museum, NMSU.

The photo below is a close-up of a second bowl, also found in El Paso's Chinatown, and shows a hand-painted floral design similar to the one on the bowl in the drawing. The photo is used by permission of the Centennial Museum, UTEP.
