Mentor Role

A mentor is an existing UNM manager who is willing and able to share his or her knowledge and work experience with a new UNM manager. The mentor role will vary depending on the needs of the mentee and on the partnership the mentor builds with the mentee.

The mentor may need to instruct and teach new skills and knowledge required as a manager.  The mentor will need to assess the needs of the mentee to be able to develop a plan to instruct the mentee.An advisor helps the mentee develop goals and objectives for his or her career as a manager.  Goals should be developed in SMART goal for which includes specific, measurable, achievable, results-focused, and time bound.The mentor will be a resource when the mentee needs encouragement.  The mentor will need to offer appropriate motivation, such as, encouragement, support, or incentives for whatever situation the mentee is having difficulty in his or her management position. The mentor may be called upon as support or offer suggestions to help with difficult situations.  The mentor will be able to offer suggestions or materials to help the mentee deal with a situation and reach goals.  The mentor is also a contact to help the manager new to UNM navigate the work culture. The mentor helps the mentee make connections in the UNM culture.  The mentor may introduce the mentee to other UNM employees who can help the mentee be successful. The mentor should show examples of good management skills, ethics, values, and professional practices.  The best way for a mentee to learn effective management skills or learn about the UNM culture is by watching how an experienced manager performs.
