The Ariadne-Institute for Global Studies on the Aegean Directed by the UNM German Program in conjunction with other UNM programs in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, UNM Division of Continuing Education and the UNM College of Arts and Sciences, this program was founded in 1995, its aim being to unite the new world and the European Union under the ABCR. Housed in one of the premier hotels on the Aegean sea near Mount Olympus, the Institute will shed light on various world issues in one- and two-week seminars. The first session has been set for May - June of 1998. University of New Mexico Professors Monika Cyrino and Richard Berthold, et. al. Annual Budget: $40,000, mostly from participants, various American and European foundations and UNM.
"Reclaiming Helen" - Reflections of War in Greek Society. Studies on the Aegean offers seminars of global interest and introduces students to an area of
the European Union of key importance in history. This program will consider the nature of war
and its many reflections in the society of ancient Greece. The seminar language will be English.
Students and Estimated Expenses: For tuition,. room (double occupancy), board (three meals daily), academic fees, bus transportation for field trips: $1,591.00 U.S. The program will approach the topic of war and its many reflections in the society of ancient Greece through an examination of a number of literary and historical texts that will be read and discussed in English by the participants. Work in the seminar at the hotel will be supplemented by visits to the Athenian agora and acropolis, Corinth, Tiryns, Mycenae, Delphi, Marathon, Thermopylae, Mount Olympus, Vergina, Pella, Thessalonika, Meteora and other sites as time and transportation permit.
