Prologue, 2009

More than twenty years ago, I began a list of sources on the archaeology and prehistory of northwest Mexico—that is to say, of the region between Mesoamerica (specifically, the region known as West Mexico) and the southwestern United States. The focus of this effort was the Mexican states of Chihuahua and Sonora. My work as a CRM archaeologist prevented me from pursuing my interest in the region, and I gave my files to Todd and Christine VanPool, who put the bibliography on their web site (and also maintained and amplified it) while they finished their studies at the University of New Mexico. The situation has changed since then; the Drs. VanPool have a full plate with their other obligations, while I am sometimes able to contemplate the prehistory of northwest Mexico.

I gratefully acknowledge the help of everyone who gave me citations to include in the original bibliography, and the Drs. VanPool for creating a web version and maintaining in for several years on their web site. I ask my colleagues' help in maintaining the bibliography, by sending me pertinent references. A bibliography such as this is a communal effort, rather than the product of a single individual.
